Nothing irritates us more than flying, crawling, or otherwise annoying insects invading our space! Most of us flash back to a 1980’s horror show, and throw our green sensibilities into the trash can as we reach for a can of insecticide.
But wait! There are green ways to control pests without resorting to harmful chemicals and sprays. One of the most effective is simple boric acid. Boric acid is completely non-toxic to humans and pets, and kills insects as it is such a fine powder that it is absorbed into their lungs so they can no longer breathe. Sprinkling this around the periphery of your home is quite effective, as is scattering it throughout your carpets to control fleas.

Another great thing about boric acid is that it works physically instead of chemically, so insects and fleas don’t build up an immunity that could render an expensive treatment ineffective. Cockroaches and ants also carry the powder back to their nests, killing their friends and relatives who could also come to bother you.
Ants also hate the smell of mint and cloves. Peppermint oil, crushed cloves, clove oil, or mint leaves can be effective deterrents, and also will leave your home smelling fresh instead of like a chemical waste dump. Flies hate the smell of eucalyptus oil, placing a few drops on a cloth and hanging it where flies congregate will help stop this annoyance.
Although we love munching on crunchy cucumbers in our salads, ants find them disgusting and will not stick around when cucumber slices or peels are placed near their entry points. Aspartame has also been proven to kill ants - hmmmm, should we be eating this stuff?
